Shear Strength Testing Overview

When it comes to shear strength testing, NobelClad sets the standard high to provide clad and composite metal solutions above the minimum requirements. We believe stringent testing is the only way to know clad materials and equipment will work as designed and throughout the equipment’s lifecycle.

Shear Strength Definition

The purpose of a shear strength test is to determine the adhesion of a joint and its mechanical response. Measuring clads ability to withstand forces causing the bond to slide is imperative for ensuring quality materials are delivered and fabrication timelines will be met.

NobelClad Shear Testing Standards

Shear strength testing is performed on ~90% of clad plates produced at NobelClad’s facility in Mount Braddock, Pennsylvania and Liebenscheid, Germany and is the most common test specified to demonstrate and certify the clad bond strength.

 

Shear strength testing is performed in accordance with order requirements and clad specifications that include: ASME SA263, SA264, SA265 and ASTM B898 and B432, and NobelClad specification DMC100. NobelClad clad plates consistently demonstrates superior shear strength when compared alternative clad manufacturers. DetaClad™ product’s superior bond strength is reflected in the higher specified minimum shear test requirements in DMC100 vs. ASME/ASTM standards (see table below). Weld overlay clad is not produced to these standards and bond shear strength generally not tested.
